Victor Hugo – Freedom, Dictators, and Revolution

Posted by Orrin Woodward on January 30, 2008

The quote below reminds me of:

William Wallace in Bravheart , Maximus in Gladiator, Winston Churchill against Hitler, George Washington against King George and England, Oliver Cromwell against King Charles, Martin Luther against the Pope, Spartacus against his Roman masters, Demosthenes against Philip!

When dictatorship is a fact, revolution becomes a right.

Victor Hugo
(1802-1885)

Throughout history, men and women have fought against tyrants who will steal a person’s property, liberty and life.  It takes men and women of character to stand for their freedom against the tyrants.  Can you give any other examples that this quote reminds you of?

You could make a case that the election on 11/8/16 was an example of this. It appears people are fed up with the status quo. They made a radical statement to Washington and state houses that they want to be heard. It was largely the little guy who stood up and voted–even though he voted in a billionaire on the national level.

It will be interesting to me to see if those still left in state and national government are listening.

In my opinion, the Democratic Party got greedy eight years ago when Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi rammed a bunch of legislation through because the president said he had a mandate. I’m hoping the Republican Party doesn’t exercise a similar power grab and listens to the citizens.

    I’m open to your thoughts.
