Charlie “Tremendous” Jones: The Price of Leadership

Posted by Orrin Woodward on March 6, 2013

An old Charlie “Tremendous” Jones tape kept me

building my compensated community many times when I was hurting. Charlie’s ability to share inspirational truth is second to none. I cannot count the number of times I reached for Charlie’s tape to speak truth to me one more time. Fortunately, in the last year of Charlie’s life, I had the honor of getting to know him and his family. Spending a day together in Harrisburg and later in Port St. Lucie were two days I will remember forever. Remarkably, the years of listening and applying the principles he taught on that worn out tape led to great conversations with Charlie on leadership, faith, and legacy. The gift of his teaching and friendship was invaluable to me. In fact, Charlie, shortly before he passed away, sent me a portion of his library, telling me he knew I would use the books to make a difference. I told him I would and I intend to follow through on my commitment with the LIFE Business and LeaderShift.

Charlie “Tremendous” Jones lived his life with passion

and commitment. The reader can see just a sliver of this passion in the following video. Charlie was filled with Jesus Christ and his example made everyone around him better. I thank God for men like Charlie Jones who teach that ruined sinners, who accept Jesus Christ, can do “Tremendous” things with their lives.

Sincerely,

Orrin Woodward

  1. Thank you Orrin for introducing me to Mr. Tremendous. He is very inspirational, as you are.
I can see why you reached for his tapes to speak truth to you. I can see myself doing the same. He has a way to capture your attention & truly take in what he saying. A very captivating speaker.
    Thanks again

  2. Thank you for that video. My eleven year old son and I watched this video together this morning. What a great way to start the day! Looking forward to getting his book. I always saw it on the tool table at Major, but never picked it up. Thanks Orrin

  3. What a great way to start the day Orrin!! I am so thankful that you got to know Mr.Jones and share his passion with us now. I have never thought of weariness that way before. It really helps put things in perspective! I really loved how he said vision is seeing things from God’s point of view. That is really helpful for me. The leadership of this community have done a wonderful job translating Mr.Jones passion and lessons to us. Thank you for your investment and unending commitment to weariness!

Amazing video Orrin! I haven’t heard anything from “Tremendous” in decades! Now I remember why my memories of his material and spirit are so strong! I appreciate the way you lead us to remember the things we forgot and those that we’ve lost focus on. Thank you once again!

Charles “tremendous” Jones was an influence in my life straight out of high school. I went to Tenn. Temple Bible school and attended the great Highland Park Baptist church back in the early ’70’s. Dr. Lee Roberson had Mr.Jones speak to the school several times. I never realized that he set me to setting goals in life and striving to get them. The phrase Mr. Jones always quoted was “you can know where you will be in the next five years by the books you read, the audios you listen to, and the people you associate with.” Then pastor Dr. Lee Roberson constantly told his church and the students he lead at TTU,”Everything rises and falls on Leadership”. The multiplication of these caliber of men and women are ever so needed.

  12. Thanks for the treat Orrin. My Dad used to listen to Charlie all the time. It brough back great memories. My favorite line was “Vision, is seeing things from God’s perspective”. How true. It says a lot about you and your leadership that Charlie gave you part of his library of materials. What a great responsibility and yet, a blessing. Tony

I am like Hilary and I have never seen anything by Charlie before. I really enjoyed they way he explained things about leadership. I love how Charlie Jones said that great people do what they should do not what they want to do and that is one thing that makes them great. Leaders also find the reasons why to do something. Thanks for sharing Orrin.

Thanks for posting this Orrin. We had the pleasure of seeing Charlie speak a number of times and have a few recordings we still play occasionally. He was so funny and so right with every point he would make. Our kids love hearing him too. He made a difference in my life, for sure.
A funny thing he did when he would meet people, even in passing (like in the hallway) was give you a big hug and usually a kiss on the cheek. What a riot to watch! Also, how it would rock your thinking, as another man, to have him do it to you…a stranger. He demonstrated enthusiasm and he demonstrated love. Those lessons were very important to me as a man with a hard heart years ago. What a gift his words and actions have been to me. What a treasure that man was for this world.

Thanks for this blog, Orrin! We had known Charlie for such a long time ~ he was a selfless person, always edifying & honoring the Lord in all he said & did! He, indeed, was a man of passion, in all the areas of his life, & just remebering him, brings a smile to our faces! We fell in love with him, especially during our “behind the stage” moments that we shared. He was so humble, honest, transparent, & full of integrity! Just having known Charlie is one of the most precious blessings we’ve had the honor of receiving!

Thanks for the reminder that we are blessed as we “do more than our share”… pay the price for weariness… that we need thick skin and soft hearts as we work with people to share truth. Thank you for putting a community of people that can encourage each other as we go forward to make a difference in this world.

Quite an experience… as I’ve heard he always was. I found him a bit hard to follow, and a bit hard to swallow. I like facing raw responsibility as much as I like raw asparagus. But I remember a couple things, and I think I understand better the meaning of honor. I remember this:

“No man was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.”
    -Calvin Coolidge

    Keep going, we’re with you…

I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Jones speak at a business event several years ago. His wife had died a short time before, he had terminal cancer, he had a patch over one eye and yet his outlook on life was still amazing. His was a testimony of what the presence of God through the Holy Spirit can do to and for a person who is experiencing a “smooth” life or one of tremendous challenges.

One of the things he talked about and is what he is known by is, “there are 2 things that will make a difference where you are five years from how, the books you read and the people you associate with.” I like to add the word “intentionally” along with the “people you associate with”. I want to consciously/intentionally place myself in the presence of great people. Mr. Jones also said, “tell a story make a point, make a point tell a story.”

Orrin, There was a talk by Charlie “T” Jones on Commitment. It is one of my favorite talks he gave & the only place I ever heard it was through the leadership subscription several years ago. Any chance of there being a recording of that talk in an archive?

I handed that CD out to so many people that eventually I couldn’t find one to listen to myself & even years later my wife & I think of that talk every time we hear the word COM MIT MENT as if it could only be said in the voice of Charlie “T” Jones!
