The Story You Tell Yourself

Posted by Orrin Woodward on October 15, 2013

Here is a short video clip from a talk I gave recently on the power of the story you tell yourself. Man, I wish I could help people see how important this principle is to their future! For if someone will not let go of the bitterness in the past, he will never free his hands to receive the blessings in the future! LIFE Leadership is a company that teaches people how to let go of what is holding them back so they can make the future better than the past. In fact, I spend more time helping people reframe their thinking than any other single leadership activity. Indeed, we have thousands of satisfied customers, who, by their changed lives, communicate the power in changed thinking to change lives.

At any rate, it is time for me to get back to working on the historical case-studies for my upcoming book. We have a LeaderShift that must be completed to ensure justice for all. Have a blessed day and remember to learn from the past while focusing on the future!

Sincerely,

Orrin Woodward

    Great video Orrin!!
I think you are the master of self talk/reframing! That’s why you are so great at recognizing and helping others reframe their thinking. You have taught us so much and continue to model this principle to us all the time. Thank you for that!

I love this. I learned to do this early in life. My husband is still learning it and struggles sometimes with it, so I really appreciate the reminder.

  9. Orrin. Wow, Give us more.. Every Day, we, as i mean all of us, on Face Book, need a clip from Orrin. Powerful, and oh so True.. Let me share a story with you about my Father, and when he was diagnosed with Cancer in 1999. The first Doctor, gave him a Doom & Gloom, prognosis, told my Dad, nothing can be done, make your Bucket list, give ya, 3-4 months at best. My Father’s response? Hmmm, oh really Doc? Well geezz, he said. I do believe I will exercise my right to a 2nd opinion. So he did that. Prognosis, from the 2nd Doctor, Well much Brighter. He outlined the treatment to my Dad, and told him that starting that Day, if my Father would stop smoking, he would dare to say he would give him 5-10 years. YEARS, not MONTHS. His Bucket list Grew.. He Quit smoking went through, the treatment and lived another 6 and half years. Love that about my Dad. I so like what you had to say about learning how to respond, in a more mature manner, instead of responding Emotionally. I have to work hard at that, even at my age. I grew up with 7 brothers, and stuck in the middle of all of them, always trying to compete with them, and at the same time defending myself. It was a crazy household. I tend to speak what is on my mind and sometimes my response can be well a little wicked, to sy the least, so you see Orrin, I need to keep learning, here is the Good thing about that, I am willing to do that. Learn, from real people like you. Nothing Fake about you. I like that. I like that a lot.

Wow Orrin, I’ve heard the message of positive reframing many times, but this one hit home. It’s crazy how similar your childhood story is the my husbands, only his relationship w/ his dad did not end up reconciling; for his fathers drinking led to his demise. Would it be okay to ask for your prayers for my husband to overcome these similar “roadblocks”? He is awesome at what he does professionally, but struggles with keeping everyone at a distance. Thank you for your transparency and all that you do for it gives hope!
    God bless!

Thank you Orrin for pointing out those things that we so often overlook, partly out of ignorance and partly out of habitual behavior.

One of the things that hit home again from the video and also from one of the audios recently (I think this event was what I was listening to on audio) was that our interpretation of the events are more important than what actually happened. And how often we repeat them can be deletarious to us and our success in life.

Looking forward to Milwaukee and being with a chunk of the team.

Thanks for the great post & video O! I believe everyone fights this at some point in their LIFE. We definitely need to get this message out to the masses. Thanks again!

  13. Wow , very powerful and true!

  14. Dave Nelson said

i know you speak the truth, for you say the same things that the other christian christ follower leaders say. Its easy to see that the Holy Spirit is placing the same message on your hearts.

  15. The discipline to pattern-interrupt the simple temptation of the negative thought process is so counter-culture that it takes more than sheer will power to achieve successfully. People need to first become aware that it’s possible to interrupt our thought process. The explanatory style theory and concept of cause & effect is so foreign to popular society it takes your example and the LIFE Leadership product line to enlighten people of this powerful truth! I know that outside of the LIFE community, I have never met anyone talking about (let alone applying) these principles.

Thanks for sharing! This, by far, is one of the most valuable lessons I have learned to date on my personal success journey. Onward to making a difference in this nation by choosing to be different myself!

Love this post and video, Orrin! Since joining the LIFE community, reframing is one of most important principles that I try to apply everyday. Thank you for your leadership!

Thank you Orrin, I really needed to hear the tonight(this morning). Even though I know he didn’t intend to, my father just metaphorical gave me a blow to the gut tonight. It’s amazing the way our God works all things together for good. I haven’t posted here before, but George Guzzardo told me one of the things I could be doing is reading his blog to the thought of it would be the next best thing to him actually being here. And, since he also said his goal is to get us (my team and I) a chance to see you I just figured that same would hold true here. I hope that logic is acceptable. Thank you for your time and I’ll see you in Milwaukee.

    God Bless,

    Shaun

Thank you Orrin! I don’t think I can hear this teaching enough. One of Marc’s greatest skills as a leader/mentor is to help me reframe things I am facing. I am so THANKFUL for his and your leadership and teaching!!!

Thank you Orrin great video! REFRAME- it is difficult to do but I have found it to be so rewarding when you truly absorb the positive story.
I have recently come to find great pleasure helping others see their predicament through a different lens.
I am learning that what we may see as an interruption may actually be a divine intervention.

Wow, Elizabeth … “I am learning that what we may see as an interruption may actually be a divine intervention.” Talk about re-framing! That was a “cherry” on top of the “deluxe Sundae” that was Orrin’s video! Thank you for all you do for me … just being YOU!!! πŸ™‚

Great message. It is helping me now. Its deep and tough to start believeing this new story. Losing bitter feelings caused by a situatoin can be tough.. Ive discovered that(for me) alittle down time is nessesary to relax; rethink and remember what my life is and what im about. And to remember that.I AM A CHAMPION! This message has definately helped. Thank you Orrin.

Thank you so much for this reminder. I have a natural tendency to struggle in this area. Last night Bob Rasmussen closed our open meeting by saying the only thing holding us back from being successful in the life business was our thinking. I’ve been pondering ever since to discover what changes I personally need to make in my thinking to break through my own barriers to success. If it’s worth doing well, it’s worth doing badly until I get it right. You taught me that too. Thank you

I’ve been part of LIFE for just over 2 years and I never realized how much I re-framed my thinking in the past. My older brother (2 years older) was smarter, bigger (6 inches taller) and better in everything we did. He would beat me in baseball, basketball, video games, board games and finishing homework. I can’t say I never got discouraged but I really believed what my dad always told me, “If you put your mind to it, you can do anything”. So I would play him over and over again. Then I would play by myself and practice different things like sky hooks, etc. I didn’t know then but my brother was preparing me to be a champion in so many ways. So remember the fight, the setbacks, the struggles make the victory much sweeter. “God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with your testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it”
    Thanks,
    Orrin

Yes! After starting this journey to leadership I have found that the most work takes place in the mind. I am undergoing the constant process of renewing my mind. It’s a challenging but rewarding battle!

Thank you for teaching this so clearly. Its a shame these skills are taught more frequently. I never even gave any thought to the fact that I only live an event once, but I might play it out in my head hundreds of times. Of course the version I’m exposed to more often is going to have the greater impact. I will continue to work on my self-talk.
